Happy Saint Patrick's Day! I know that this is not the best picture, but I thought that it was really cute! :-) We had green pancakes for breakfast! My mom made my dad a shamrock pancake and a leprechaun pancake! She put icing and glittery sprinkles on them! We are having fondue tonight and I hope we watch an Irish or St. Patrick's Day movie!

Fashion Show

Guess what?! On Saturday (3/10/12) I was in a fashion show as a guest model!! It was an American Girl Doll Fashion Show! I had a lot of fun! It was pretty cool to walk down the runway with all the people looking at me!

The runway was a sort of cross, one part longer than the other one. I had to climb up a few stairs when they called my name. When I got to the runway, I walked down the runway, stopped at the end, showed my doll, turned around, walked to the end of the part on the right, showed my doll, turned around, walked to the end of the part on the left, turned around, walked back to the head of the runway, and walked down the stairs again! Once every Guest Model walked on the runway, we all walked down and back again! Before we went back to our tables, the people running the Guest Model part of the show gave us a small gift and a certificate of participation. The gift was a cute little 'make-up' bag with a mirror attached!

We entered to win the minor prizes, but we didn't win anything. They are announcing the Grand Prizes tonight, and will call us if we win! :-( Our grandparents went with us! I had a really great time! I will post some pics soon!

Movie Review: The Lorax

The Lorax

Oh. My. Gosh. This was one of the best movies I've ever seen!

It's a story about a boy named Ted. He has a crush on a girl named Audrey. When he finds out that her dream is to see a real living tree, he sets out on an 'adventure' to find a tree. His energetic grandma tells him that he should see the Once-Ler, an old man who lives outside of their town made from plastic. The Once-Ler tells him parts of the story of trees, one part everyday. In the end of the story, the Once-Ler gives Ted the last Truffula Tree seed, and tells him to plant it. There is some conflict with the greedy town zillionaire, Mark O'Hare. He and his bodyguards try to stop Ted, but in the end Ted has all of the townspeople and the two bodyguards on his side. The trees grow again and the Lorax comes back to see the Once-Ler, who has trees growing in his yard.

This movie is definitely two thumbs up, and a 4.5 star rating!

Hunger Banquet

Today my group in church (Roots & Shoots) held an Oxfam Hunger Banquet. A Hunger Banquet demonstrates what hunger really is in our world. When each person came in they paid $5, they reached into a basket and took out a card. The cards read one of the following: High-Income, Middle-Income, or Low-Income.

The High-Incomes received:

Table and Chairs
Silverware
3 Course Meal
Waitresses

The Middle-Incomes received:

Chairs
Silverware
Rice and Beans

The Low-Incomes received:

Seats on the Floor
Rice
No Silverware
No Chairs
No Beans

I read two pages of the script in the beginning and was a food server. I spooned out rice and beans to the Middle- and Low-Incomes.

In over 35 years of Oxfam’s work, millions of dollars have been raised to support human rights and put an end to poverty. Millions of people have participated in an Oxfam Hunger Banquet or skipped a meal to recognize the plight of the world’s hungry.

While the proportion of the world’s populations living in hunger has decreased, hunger endures for millions of people.

This Hunger Banquet is a metaphor for how food and other resources are inequitably distributed in the world. As such, an Oxfam Hunger Banquet can only touch upon the issues. We cannot recreate the many and complex ways in which poverty manifests itself. We will not have time to go into all the problems associated with lack of access to healthcare, education and employment opportunities, and the realities of the day-to-day struggle for survival.

The one thing that we would like you to remember is this: everyone on earth has the same basic needs; it is only our circumstances – where we live and the culture we are born into – that differ. Each person’s place is randomly determined.

Some are born into prosperity and security while millions, by no choice of their own, are born into poverty.

As each of us walked in the door here today, we chose our lot at random. Look around, and you can see that equality and balance don’t exist here.

It is important to note that no one section of this room represents a single country. While the US is one of the wealthiest countries on earth, 36 million Americans live in poverty.

Hopefully along with the money we raised for Oxfam, we also raised awareness about hunger in our world.

Orlando!!

Hi Everyone!
I have so much news!! My parents surprised me in December, and we went to Orlando! Here's how it happened:
I was sleeping when my mom came in with a bag about 3:00 am. She woke me up and told me to get dressed in the the clothes that were in the bag. Then she left. I got the clothes on and went into the hall. After all my sisters were in the hall, my mom did our hair. Then we went down stairs. And to our surprise there was four suit cases! Our initials were on them! After breakfast, we got in the car and went to the airport where we met up with our grandparents! It seemed to take forever to get on the plane, but once we were on it the ride there seemed to take forever! :-P We went to Universal Studios, and we stayed at the Hard Rock Hotel!! Two of my favorite rides was The Incredible Hulk and Harry Potter: The Dragon Challenge!!! I also liked:

After four fun-filled days, on Christmas Eve we were packed up, ready to go home, thinking about setting up our Christmas tree. But when we were in the hired car, we noticed that we weren't headed toward the airport, but...............

DISNEY WORLD, ANIMAL KINGDOM!!!!!

We stayed at the Animal Kingdom from Christmas Eve (24th) to the 27th! We had so much fun! Our favorite restaurant was The Tusker House. The food was great!! My favorite rides there were:

Holiday Chains

Holiday Chains
Here is how to make these cool Holiday Chains. I made the chains shown here for Thanksgiving, but you can make yours however you want.

List of Tools Needed:

Tape

Scissors

Three Pieces of Colored Paper of your Choice

Step One:

Choose your paper. You will want to use colored construction paper, colors of the holiday. Find a smooth surface to work on.

Step Two:

Fold the pieces of paper, separately, accordion style.

Step Three:

Take one of the folded pieces of paper, and flatten it out. Cut along the creases until you have strips of the paper. Repeat with the other pieces

Step Four:

Decide on a pattern for the chain. Then, take the first strip and fold it into a circle. Take a piece of tape and put it on the overlap. Put the second color in the chain, make a circle, and put the tape on the overlap.

Step Five:

Repeat step four until you have used up all of the strips. This is my little sister with my finished chain!

Step Six:

Find a place to put it, and enjoy! Here are my chains!

The Wizard of Oz, Book vs. Movie

Dear Readers,
I have another book vs. movie post, and this one is about the Wizard of Oz. I recently finshed the book, and I noticed a lot of changes from the movie. Here is a list of things. I won't list all of them because I think that you should read the book and I don't want to spoil it!

It's not red slippers, it's silver slippers!
The original Wizard of Oz describes a different appearance for Dorothy, the Lion, the Scarecrow and the Tin Woodsman.
They see the Wizard one at a time.

I think that 3 differences is enough, especially as they are the strongest, at least I thought! I hope that you read the Wizard of Oz!

Sleep Away Camp

Dear Readers,
I went to a camp in August, not a sailing camp, but a water-sports camp. I stayed there for a week, but the hurricane (For those of you who do not know about our recent hurricane, the East Coast had a hurricane, Hurricane Irene) came in the middle of camp, and split our week in half. :-( Camp was still fun, but we had to stay the weekend at our house.
Things that we did at camp:

Sail
Water Ski
Knee board (I had the time of my life!)
Go on a huge zipline
Climb up a rock wall
Sleep in a cabin

I had a lot of fun, but I probably won't go back in 2012, sadly.

Sailing Camp!

(This was meant to be posted on the sixth. Sorry!)

This week I had sailing camp! It was a lot of fun, and I'm glad I'm going back next week! (I'm already planning how to pay for next summer! ;-) So, that week was Harry Potter week, and we were split into the houses. I was in Gryffindor (Sunfish), and my sisters were in Hufflepuff (Opti). There was another group, Slythenclaw! there wasn't enough people to make the other two houses, so they combined it! They are the Lasers.
Here's what we learned in my group:

We learned how to rig (set up) a Sunfish, and to de-rig it (take apart.)
Rules of the Road (or River!)
The Right-away
Leeward and Windward
We had a capsize drill, and I'm glad that we had it!

On Wednesday, there was no wind, so we had contests. We were split into groups, and we had little races.

Movie Review Number One:

Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer Summer

THIS movie is really funny and made me laugh more than two times. Judy makes a plan to have the best summer ever with her friends. But two of her best friends go away, leaving her to do the plan with her third friend, and her Aunt Opal. I recommend seeing this movie.

Movie Review Number Two:

Rio

RIO is a great movie for families. It's about a bird who is taken from the jungle, abandoned in Minnesota during winter. A little girl finds him and promises to take care of him. She names him Blu. Then, when they are grown up, a man finds Blu and wants to bring him to a special place where he wants Blu to mate with a female, Jewel, to save their species. The movie brings on a crazy journey, and it is up to Jewel and Blu to decide their fate! I recommend seeing this movie also!

Park Quest Week!

Oh wow. I was gone for six days, five nights camping, doing Park Quest We had already eight Parks that I didn't post about, though. I have a lot of pictures and things I would like to post about, so many things actually, that I will have to do a separate post for each park, or else I will have written the longest post in the world! (Well, maybe not! =D) Here is a short summary of the parks we went to.

Day One:

South Mountain

We slept at Janes Island for two nights, days one, two, and left on three. We slept at Cedarville for two nights, days three, four, and left on five. We slept at Cunningham Falls (stink bugs ruled the bathroom, there were millions in the woman's room!!) for one night, days five and we left on Sunday! We have done 19 out of 24 Quests so far, and we're doing more this weekend!

That's about all for the intro post! I saw some cool things on this trip, so get ready to see some cool things!

Address Labels

This morning my mom helped me make address labels on Microsoft, and they turned out really cute. Here is the picture I put on them.

I love cats, so I decided to put one that looks like my cat Sox on my labels.

I'm thankful to my Mom for helping me with this, and letting me have one of her label sheets. The sheet has thirty labels on it, so I won't be running out anytime soon! I'm also saving my money to buy a pack of 100 so I can have my own! I think the price is $5, but it is a good deal because I get 100 sheets! 30 x 100 = 3,000. Three thousand labels! WOW!

This was a really random post, but I wanted to post it because I love the labels so much!

Home-Made Tortilla Chips Recipe

I would like to share a recipe on home-made tortilla chips!
Ingredients:
Tortillas (as many as you want - each tortilla makes eight chips)
Cooking Oil
Any kind of topping:
Cinnamon and Sugar
Garlic Powder (my favorite!)
Other. . .
Tools:
Plate
Oven
Blunt (not that sharp) Knife
Cutting Board
Cookie Sheet
Directions:

Preheat oven to 375 on bake.
Cut as many tortillas as you want into eighths. This means cut in half, cut each half in half, and then all in half again.
Spray cookie sheets with oil, and place the tortilla pieces on it.
Put in oven, and set timer to 15 minutes, or until the chips are crispy.
Have an adult help you take the cookie sheet out of the oven.
Spray the chips with the oil, and sprinkle the topping on the chips.
Place chips onto plate.
Enjoy!

This Week's Scenario!!

From the title of this post, one might think that I am going to have a CRAZY week! I really don't know!

Monday- Meet grandparents and take water taxi to Fort McHenry.

Tuesday- Zumba, swim team (for my little sisters).

Wednesday- Library (for my little sisters), ~~swim team~~ (for all, I believe :( ).

Thursday- Music Lessons (for all), swim (??)

Friday- Rollerskate.

That is my week, and I don't know if that is ALL we are doing! My Mom hasn't told me everything that we are doing.

Another thing is that my Dad (My Wonderful and Awesome Daddy-o!) is going to Texas for work for a few nights. =( This is the second time he's been to Texas, but the first time he only went for two days. This time he is going a little less than a week.

I have, my sisters and I, have this week off school! Yay!! It is one of our planned weeks. I have no idea what we are going to do, other than what's on the list.

I got new lenses in my glasses. I wanted to keep my frames, because they fit me, and because I like them a lot! My lenses are transition, and to those of you who don't what that means, it means that they turn either gray or brown in the sun. Mine turn gray, and this is my second, in a row, pair of transition glasses. =)

I'm going to get a new blog photo!! I don't know when, but it will be soon!

Tri-State Bird Rescue

Today I went with my RE group to a bird rescue place. We didn't see any birds, just the places where they kept the birds. We were helping them get ready for the spring "rush."
One thing I did was make meal-worm substance. Yes, it might sound gross, but the only thing in it that might be gross is ground Guinea-Pig pellets. The fact is that we need to feed the worms special food because the people need to know what they are putting into the birds. The birds eat the meal-worms, who eat the substance. If you ever have to feed meal-worms (which probably won't happen!) here is the recipe.

Meal-Worm Substance

1 cup ~ Wheatena

1 cup ~ Oat Bran

1 cup ~ Yellow Cornflower

1/2 cup ~ Ground Guinea-Pig or Rabbit pellets

1 ~ Ziplock bag (per all ingredients)

Pour the ingredients into bag.

Grind the pellets until there aren't any chunks.

Add that to the bag and mix the bag up until thoroughly mixed.

Feed to meal-worms!

To the meal-worms - enjoy!

I enjoyed my trip there. I really learned a lot. One of the things I learned was that even though humans have a good intention of feeding baby birds, it isn't a good thing. The birds won't migrate, because they think that they can get food from the fishers. When the fishers leave, the birds would die from hunger. =( That would be a shame.

At the bird rescue, the people help the birds a best as they can. And they try to release them where they found them. If they can't, they try to find a similar place.

Sounder - The Movie

As I said in my last post, I would write a post about a movie we watched last night. It is called Sounder, and it is a Disney movie. Here is a trailer. It is not the version that I watched, but I think they are pretty much the same!

Sounder is a movie set in the 19th century. It is about a boy whose father is taken away unjustly, because he is black. The boy looks for his father, and travels far from home. He doesn't end up finding his father, instead he finds a book and a special friend. His friend is a black school-master who offers to teach him to read and write in exchange for the boy doing some of the teacher's chores.

Sounder is a movie based on the book by William Howard Armstrong. It is a truly touching movie, and I give lots of credit to that people who worked so hard to make this movie happen.

I hope you watch the movie or read the book, because I won't reveal anymore!

A New (And Improved!) Room

As my little sister (Tuki's Blog) wrote on her blog, yesterday we had a cleaning frenzy in our rooms! I went through tons of old things, and put them into three groups.

Trash
Recycle
Good Will

I had lots of things in the 'Trash' and 'Recycle' bins! :-D Maybe that's a good thing, because it shows how I am helping the Earth by reusing of things I don't need. Maybe it's a good thing for me; I learned that you can't keep things forever. I watched a movie last night, Sounder. It was about learning that things change, and don't last forever. I will write a post about it after. After cleaning up my room, I went through some of my old clothes (aka shorts!) and put them in the hallway. Then Tuki, LS3, or Green Bird would find things they liked, and try them on. If they didn't fit, then a smaller person would try it on. If didn't fit LS3, it would go in the Good Will pile. Same for Green Bird. If something of LS3's clothes didn't fit her, then it was going to Good Will also! ;-)
Then we watched The Gold Retrievers, and Sounder, and that was our day!

He is wonderful, silly, fun, hard-working, playful, helpful, loves to build things, he knows lots of math (that's a great help in school!), and millions of other things I can't write down. They are too wonderful to describe! Even with lots of detail and pictures. You would have to be with him yourself. But best of all, I love him, and he loves me!

The Little Mermaid Original VS The Little Mermaid Movie

Today I read Hans Christian Andersen's, The Little Mermaid. Since I have seen the movie MILLIONS of times, I didn't have to watch it all over again. What I did was:

Read the original version.
Compare the two versions.

That doesn't seem like a lot, but the story was long. I'm sure it was one of the longest in the book!! It was also hard to understand, so I re-read it. That added to the time it took!
One of the things that was different with the movie is that the little mermaid (she doesn't actually have a name in the real version) gets married to the prince. In the real tale, she dies. And she doesn't marry the prince. Someone else does. =( Sad, right? ='( Another difference is that in the original, the little mermaid does not have animal friends that talk to her and lead her on her way. And in the tale, when the little mermaid gets her legs, her feet feel like sharp knives are digging into them and her feet bleed. Obviously that doesn't happen in the Disney movie!!

It is much better, though. It has much more detail. For example, in the Andersen version, we learn much more about each of the sister's, whereas in the Disney version those characters are not developed at all. I don't want to tell you too many details because you should read it!

9-1-1 Commendation

Guess what?!? Last July my mom had a gallbladder attack (but we didn't know that's what it was then) and I had to call 9-1-1 from the car. I was very scared because my mom was in a lot of pain, but I stayed calm as best as I could and told the dispatcher the information she needed to get help to us. Today I went to the Department of Emergency Services in our county and I was awarded with a certificate and special coin for doing such a good job. Later my family and I had a tour of the dispatch offices where they take 9-1-1 calls. It was really cool and there were a LOT of computers! The lady (Captain Holly) was very nice and answered our questions. It was a really cool and special day with my family!! ♥PP

Happy Saint Patrick's Day!!

Happy St. Patrick's Day! (That is not my dog, because I don't have one.) I am part Irish, so we are going to have an Irish dinner tonight. I'm not sure exactly what, but it sure smells good!! I'm making the dessert - Apple Pie. My friend M 'n M's (that's her blog name (M 'n M)) father is Irish, and he is out in Ireland for ten days. M 'n M is not going, because, well, I'm not sure!! =P

Another Absract Drawing

This week for art, we did another abstract drawing. We did one last week, but I didn't post about that one. Anyway, we did the abstract drawing inspired by an artist (who died before WWII) named Paul Klee. As I said, he is an abstract artist, but also known as an expressionist.

The Taming of the Shrew

The Taming of the Shrew is one of William Shakespeare's most famous plays. I am doing this play in my drama class. I have the part of Bianca, the daughter everyone wants to marry! : D Click here to read about this play on Wikipedia. I also will write a few things.

The Taming of the Shrew is one of Shakespeare's most well-known plays.
It is a comedy, which means it is very funny at some parts, but mostly throughout the entire play.
There are quite a few parts, which is a good thing, because there are a lot of kids in our group!
The funny part is how Katherine gets 'tamed' by Petruchio.

I can't wait for our performance!! I will try to download a video, or at least a picture. I'm not sure, though...

The Witch of Blackbird Pond

I have been reading two chapters a day for my language arts (LA). This book is an epic masterpiece! It is called The Witch of Blackbird Pond, and I just adore it! The author is Elizabeth George Speare, and I also love one of her other books, The Sign of the Beaver. Here are some pictures of the covers of The Witch of Blackbird Pond. And

Roller-Skating

Today I went roller skating at the roller rink. It's a homeschool skate. I saw some of my friends there, and we had a really great time.

Two of my favorite things about skating are going really fast and falling down. Gong really fast, because I love to feel the wind rushing next to me. And falling down, I don't know why I like it - I just do! It's fun to fall down. As long as you don't get hurt!

Some people don't like roller skating because they are very nervous about falling down. I was when I started, but when I got the hang of it it didn't seem that scary anymore. In fact, it was a lot of fun. It still is. :) I hope that lots of people enjoy skating because it's fun and it's healthy for you.

Happy Valentines Day!

I just wanted to tell everyone, Happy Valentines Day! I hope that you had a good Valentines Day, if you celebrate it! I got ten dollars from my parents! My sisters and I got to choose where we wanted to spend it. We wanted to buy dolls and Legos, so we decided to go to Wal * Mart first, becuse you can't beat their prices! :D I got a Atlantis Lego set! I made it, and it is my favorite set! It is called the 'Sea Bed Strider'. I had a fun time putting it together with my dad!

Swim Meet!!

I just got back home from our team's last meet of the season! I do swim team at a Boys & Girls Club. I love to swim soo much!! I wrote a list of swim terms in case you don't know them all! 25 - 1 lap 50 - 2 laps 75 - 3 laps 100 - 4 laps. So a 250 would be ten laps. I.M. - Individual Medley - Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Freestyle, in that order. A medley relay is back - breast - fly - free. I did a 200 free relay, a 50-Free (individual), a 50-Breast (individual), and a medley relay.I don't know what places I got, except that I know I got one 2nd place!

Abstract Drawing

This is my abstract drawing. It's called Life. I'm going to draw another one sometime. I don't know when though!! This is the story of my 'masterpiece'!

I opened my drawing pad and thought about what to make. Then, I took out my green pen and scribbled all over the page!! I colored in all the little spaces in different colors.

I named my picture Life because I thought it looked like Life. Life is made up of many different things to make one thing beautiful and strange. Different from other Lives, yet similar in some ways.
I hope you like my picture and became inspired to look at things in different ways. Thank you.

Cross Stitching

This is a ladybug I cross stitched. It is the first cross stitch I ever made, and I am very proud of it!
I got my cross stitch kit for Christmas and just last month I decided to take a look at it and make something. The ladybug was the first in the book so that's the one I did. I took out the red floss and started stitching. After a few days this came out! The back is a mess, but the front is a beautiful lady bug! :) Thanks for reading this!

You're probably wondering why my blog is called The Unsocialized Homeschooler when I'm a kid and I don't homeschool anyone! I got that name from the bumper sticker on our car. It says, "Warning! Unsocialized Homeschoolers Aboard!" and has a bomb going off! :) That's how I got my idea!

Go Green Bay!

Go Green Bay! As you probably know, at the Super Bowl last night, Sunday February 6th, the team Green Bay won! My family was so excited! We had been eating cake covered in green frosting! In yellow, my mom had written GB and XLV. XVL is the Roman numeral for 45. GB is Green Bay. I'm not sure what the exact score was, but I'm sure you know!
Do you have a sport you like to watch? I'm not really into football, but my dad and grandpa love it!

My Fish, Goldie

My Cat Sox

This is my cat, Sox! Sox is a male tabby cat (black and white is a type of tabby). He is three years old. His birthday is April 15th.
If you were wondering why we got him, here's why:
A few years ago, my mother got an e-mail from this lady whose cat had babies. She said her husband was going to drown them if nobody took them. We were the last people to take the cats. Only two were left. We named them Tiger and Sox.
We kind of saved their lives! But, Tiger ran away two years ago, and we haven't seen him in a long time. We still have Soxie Baby, and he is the greatest pet on Earth! He loves to cuddle, purr, and lay on his new heating pad! He is an outdoors cat and he lives in our garage. Thanks for reading!

Hello, I'm Purple Pixie. I am new to this blog thing, but I know a lot about it. One thing about myself is that I love to write. My friend and I love writing stories together! Since I'm a good writer, I'll try my best to write on this blog almost every day!
Another thing you should know about me is that I'm homeschooled. You probably knew that because my blog is called The Unsocialized Homeschooler! :) I love doing homeschool with my three little sisters! Little Sister 1 (LS1) is very goofy and fun. She loves football and she plays the violin. Little Sister 2 (LS2) is quiet and likes to paint, draw, color or sketch anything from the outdoors! She plays the piano, like me. Last, but not at all least, Little Sister 3 (LS3)! She loves to play with her toys and color, color, color! She plays the piano and is very cute and sweet!
